The 2022 Ford Explorer and Bronco Sport SUVs have won Top Safety Pick awards from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. This award is the highest rating possible issued by the non-profit organization. Five other Ford vehicles have won IIHS Top Safety Pick awards, including the Mustang Mach-E, Escape, Edge, F-150 crew cab, and F-150 extended cab.
Both vehicles received a “good” rating in all areas of the IIHS crashworthiness testing, the highest rating for each category. The IIHS uses six tests to assess a vehicle’s safety, including the driver and passenger side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints. To win a Top Safety Pick award, vehicles must have a front crash prevention system that earns advanced or superior ratings in vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations. All models must have acceptable or good headlight ratings for all trim levels.
